When to get professional help
Get a plumber for persistent running, cracks, floor leaks or an inaccessible cistern. A bowl that is rising or overflowing needs the blocked-toilet steps instead.
What have you noticed?
These clues help explain the problem. They do not confirm its cause.
| What you see | What to report |
|---|---|
| A trickle into the bowl | The flush seal or water-level control may need attention. |
| The cistern fills again without a flush | Water may be escaping between flushes. |
| Water on the floor | This is a separate leak to report immediately. |
What you can do now
- Listen after an ordinary flush and note whether filling stops or continues.
- Check that nothing is holding the flush button or handle down. Do not force a concealed cistern panel open.
- If you isolate the water, avoid using the toilet until the issue is resolved. Tell other occupants what has been switched off.
Details that help us arrange the repair
- Whether water enters the bowl, the overflow or the floor.
- A photo of the toilet and the flush-button arrangement.
- Whether it runs continuously or refills at intervals.
If you rent or live in a managed building, notify the owner or property manager and agree the arrangements before authorising work. Take photos only where it is safe; you can share them when CID follows up.
What affects the repair cost?
Cistern access and the compatible valve or seal affect the quote. Ask whether the price includes the part, adjustment and a check that filling stops properly.
Questions before you book
Is a running toilet a blockage?
Not necessarily. Continuous filling usually concerns the cistern mechanism; rising water in the bowl suggests a drainage problem.
Do I need a new toilet?
Not always. A plumber should identify whether a component repair is suitable before recommending replacement.
