My toilet is blocked or overflowing. What should I do?

Do not flush again if the bowl is rising. Keep people and pets away from overflow and stop using affected fixtures. If the cistern is still filling, close its accessible isolation valve only if you know how. Sewage or multiple backed-up drains needs professional attention.

When to get professional help

Seek prompt help for overflowing sewage, repeated blockage or several affected fixtures. Report a visible street sewer overflow to your municipality as well as notifying the property manager.

What have you noticed?

These clues help explain the problem. They do not confirm its cause.

What you can do now

  1. Stop repeat flushing and let other occupants know the toilet is out of use.
  2. Record whether wipes, sanitary products or an object may have entered the toilet. Tell the plumber without trying to push it through.
  3. Avoid adding chemicals or putting your hands into contaminated water. If a product was used, keep its packaging to show the contractor.

Details that help us arrange the repair

  • Whether the bowl is rising, slowly draining or completely blocked.
  • Other affected drains and whether overflow is inside or outside.
  • Known objects or products that may have entered the toilet.

If you rent or live in a managed building, notify the owner or property manager and agree the arrangements before authorising work. Take photos only where it is safe; you can share them when CID follows up.

What affects the repair cost?

A toilet obstruction and a blockage further along the drain require different access and equipment. Ask what clearing covers and how additional investigation would be priced.

Questions before you book

Are flushable wipes safe to flush?

Keep wipes out of the toilet. The City of Cape Town advises flushing bodily waste and toilet paper, with wipes and sanitary products going into the bin.

Should I flush to see if it has cleared?

Do not keep flushing a rising or blocked bowl. Arrange help if drainage has not returned normally.
