There is a leak under my sink. What now?

Stop using the sink and move stored items away if it is safe. A container can catch a small leak while you arrange help. If water continues to escape when the tap is off, isolate the accessible water supply only if you know how. Keep away from wet electrical equipment.

When to get professional help

Arrange urgent plumbing assistance for spraying water, an isolation valve that will not close or damage spreading to the floor. Leave the area if water is near live wiring.

What have you noticed?

These clues help explain the problem. They do not confirm its cause.

What you seeWhat to report
Water appears after the sink is usedThe waste connection or the tap area needs checking.
Water continues while the tap is offA pressurised supply connection may be involved.
Swollen cabinet panels or a musty smellReport how long the area may have been wet.

What you can do now

  1. Photograph the whole cabinet and the visible leak from a safe position. Avoid reaching behind appliances.
  2. Note whether the leak is continuous or follows ordinary sink use. Do not run more water just to recreate a large leak.
  3. Keep the sink out of use until the cause is addressed. Do not force plastic fittings or use glue as a substitute for the correct repair.

Details that help us arrange the repair

  • A wide photo and the connection where water first appears.
  • Whether the tap is on or off when the leak happens.
  • Nearby appliances, cabinet damage and access restrictions.

If you rent or live in a managed building, notify the owner or property manager and agree the arrangements before authorising work. Take photos only where it is safe; you can share them when CID follows up.

What affects the repair cost?

A visible loose waste connection and a damaged supply hose can require different work. Ask for the diagnosed cause and a price covering the replacement parts and a leak check.

Questions before you book

Can I use the other side of a double sink?

The two bowls may share waste pipework. Avoid using either until the leaking connection has been identified.

Does a bucket mean the problem can wait?

A bucket only limits small spills. Water can still damage cabinets or flooring, so arrange repair and check whether the supply needs isolating.
