When to get professional help
Do not remove faceplates, probe contacts or work on wiring. For smoke, fire or immediate danger, move to safety and contact emergency services.
What have you noticed?
These clues help explain the problem. They do not confirm its cause.
| What you see | What to report |
|---|---|
| One socket has stopped working | Report the local fault and the appliance previously used. |
| Several sockets are off | An affected circuit may need checking. |
| Heat, smell, discoloration or crackling | Treat these as warning signs and stop use. |
What you can do now
- Keep people away from a damaged fitting. Do not touch it to check how hot it is.
- Isolate the circuit only if the distribution board is dry, safe to reach and you can identify the correct control.
- Tell an electrician what happened before the failure. Do not move a suspect damaged appliance to another outlet or cover damage with tape.
Details that help us arrange the repair
- The room and whether one or several outlets are affected.
- Any visible marks, smell or sound; photos only from a safe distance.
- The appliance in use and any associated circuit trip.
If you rent or live in a managed building, notify the owner or property manager and agree the arrangements before authorising work. Take photos only where it is safe; you can share them when CID follows up.
What affects the repair cost?
The visible socket may not be the only fault. Ask whether the quote includes testing the supply, repairing the cause and checking safe operation.
Questions before you book
Can I keep using a socket that works but feels hot?
Stop using it and arrange assessment. Heat or a burning smell is a warning sign, even if the appliance still runs.
Can I replace the socket cover and carry on?
A cosmetic replacement does not establish electrical safety. Have the fault inspected before the outlet is used again.
